Pugwash River Watershed Culvert Catalog

Developed by Friends of the Pugwash Estuary (FOPE) in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Salmon Association (NSSA) and Clean Coasts, the Pugwash River Watershed Culvert catalog documents 13 culverts found within the Pugwash River Watershed in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia.

The comprehensive data helps to assess the impact of culverts on water quality and fish passage, supporting estuary conservation and watershed management efforts.

Research and data collection took place in the summer and fall of 2009, capturing detailed information such as:

GPS locations and survey details of culverts
Photographs of culverts showing their condition (functional or damaged)
Water quality data (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, conductivity)

Trail Development & Maintenance – Assist in creating and maintaining trails like the Pugwash Estuary Trail to enhance public access. Invasive Species Management – Help control and remove invasive plant species, such as Glossy Buckthorn, to protect native ecosystems. Bird Counts & Wildlife Monitoring – Participate in seasonal bird counts and wildlife observation to contribute to conservation research. Educational Outreach – Lead tours, organize educational programs, and speak at community events to raise awareness of the estuary’s ecology. Annual FOPE Fundraising Feast – Volunteer at this popular community event featuring a delicious meal and fundraising activities. Seasonal Flotillas – Help organize and participate in group paddling events along the estuary, often followed by a community barbecue and live music. Guided Hikes – Support guided hikes on the Estuary and Peace Trails.
