Friends of the Pugwash Estuary has participated in the Community Aquatic Monitoring Program (CAMP) conducting monthly surveys for many years.
Managed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, CAMP collected baseline data on aquatic and plant species, including their distribution and density (species type and population size), the presence of invasive species like green crab, and key aquatic conditions such as tide cycles, temperature, salinity, and oxygen levels. Sampling took place at six sites around the Estuary including Camp Pagweak, Brickyard Beach, the Basin, Crescent Beach, Pugwash Point, and Doherty Creek.
This data, combined with information from other sites along the Northumberland Strait, helped to assess the health and ongoing changes in the coastal environment and river systems of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.
